Torquay Merchant is a collaboration of two mums Lacie O’Neil and Brodie Daffy. This destination store is home to an incredible selection of carefully curated children’s clothing, homewares, furniture & interior design services. Both Brodie and Lacie have lived in Torquay and understood the huge need for such a unique space for the ever growing community here.
TM opened its doors in June this year, about 6 weeks after we launched Leÿer. We really love this store and managed to grab a few minutes with Brodie to ask her some questions about their exciting new venture.
What is your career background?
I have been running an Interior Design business called The Design Co. for the past 8 years, post my Marketing degree in the print media industry. My job now consists of styling product shoots and designing homes to room concepts. I am very hands on and educate my clients along the way so they learn the basics of the design strategies.
What has been the turning point for you in terms of making a career out of your passion?
I have always been interested in Interior design even as a child, and never thought I could have made a career out of it. So I pursued a Marketing/Advertising career until I had my first child. I felt working from home was the only option at the time and from there my husband pushed me to help design restaurants and hotels as he was in the industry. I quickly gained the buzz and decided to open my Interior design business, after completing a course online for 2 years.
From here I haven’t looked back as I have been able to be there for my children while they were little and balance a work/lifestyle. Again, my husband pushed me to take the next and biggest step I have done yet, to open up a showroom including products and services in the industry. Lacie and I both have supporting husbands who had seen the potential in our dreams.
Which current trends in interiors and homewares do you love?
Simple, clean lines and attention to detail. Interior trends change as quickly as fashion, so I believe in investing in key inventory items such as beds, dining settings, and sofas. Accessorise with homewares that are changeable and at a price point of a moderate turn around. Interior blends that I just cannot stay away from are definitely marble, oak timber and concrete. They create a harmonious balance of style and consistency
What is the best decision you have made along the way?
Taking the leap. In both a career change and opening up the showroom. Both of which have been daunting, yet the most rewarding and a personal challenge for both of us.
What is next?
We would love to begin workshops in the showroom with our local collaborators and have styling/ art classes in house, allowing our customers to have a tactile experience with our products. We aim to grow and offer the smaller artists/makers a showroom presence and experience with their products. Torquay Merchant will grow our product lines and become a one-stop shop for lifestyle brands and ranges.
Torquay Merchant currently stocks our Layback Mirror and Halfmoon Bedhead.
