Its Damo's birthday today and because its "my month" to blog I thought I’d make him answer a few quick questions - I know, great birthday present hey!
Whats your design style?
I've been asked quite a bit lately how i'd describe our design style. If i'm going to try and get all "design-y" i'd say that our design's, somewhat accidentally, would align with the aesthetic of modern Japanese timber furniture... Of course with an authentic Aussie feel!
What’s your favourite piece from our launch range and why?
Being from a carpentry background, I was never a fan of too many curves and rounds in buildings. I love using curves subtly in my furniture but I'm always conscious of keeping them subtle. You'll see pencil moulds and soft edges everywhere on our pieces. For this reason I love our coffee table, the edges remind me of the rails of a "foamie" (Foam Surfboard). I don't think you've seen me but i've actually jumped on top of it like I am riding a wave in the living room! Ill give away a coffee table if someone can actually ride a wave on it!
What kind of materials do you use and why?
Primarily we use Victorian Ash (Victorian Mountain Ash). It’s a very common construction timber and is easily sourced with FSC accreditation. I also believe its really underrated and I love its grain & colour. We'll get into a more diverse range of timbers as we grow.
Ok, he's had enough now.
Denfair was nearly two weeks ago and we are still talking about it, it was so good.
Now in its second year and with over 140 exhibitors, the event brings together the absolute best in contemporary furniture & design, lighting, textile & soft furnishings, home product design and home wares. It has become an annual destination for the Australian design community.
There is a lot of talk around local emerging brands in the media right now and its definitely an exciting time to be creative here in Australia. Soon machines will take over and automation will become part of everything we do. However, being a ‘thinker & a maker’ is something we need to celebrate and nurture or else there will never be progression. This was certainly evident at Denfair.
